What volunteering opportunities are available?
There is a role for everyone. Whether you want to help out within the club, sit on the committee, support coaching, manage teams, help poolside, train as an official, or get involved in web and social media — we have something to suit your skills, available time, and enthusiasm. You could also be part of the action at local, regional, and national events.
How much time and commitment does volunteering involve?
Even the smallest contributions make a real difference. Some roles require a few regular hours each week, others just a few hours a month, and some are one-off event roles. The amount of time you give really depends on what you fancy doing and how much you can offer.
What skills will I need?
Enthusiasm and a passion to help others are the most important things. Any club will welcome your support. For roles that require specific skills or training, Swim England offer training opportunities and official qualifications to support and upskill you as a volunteer.
What support is available?
Swim England supports all volunteers within the aquatics community. The club will give you a clear idea of what your role involves and make sure you have access to appropriate training. The most important thing is that you enjoy your volunteering experience.
Is there anything else I need to do when I sign up?
All Swim England club volunteers must hold a Swim England Club Support Membership — your club will help you through that process. If you already hold Swim England membership, no additional membership is required. If you will be working regularly with anyone under 18, a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check through the club is a legal requirement.
Can I claim benefits while volunteering?
Yes. The benefits regulations are clear that you can continue to receive benefits while volunteering. For the latest information, including guidance on Jobseekers Allowance and Incapacity Benefit, visit the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).
I am not a British national. Can I volunteer while in the UK?
Generally there should be no problem, but you must ensure that your immigration rules allow you to volunteer. Guidance is available from the NCVO website.
Can I volunteer if I have a disability?
Absolutely. It is important to us that volunteering opportunities are open to everyone. If you have a particular concern or would like help finding the right opportunity, please get in touch and we will do our best to help.
Can I volunteer if I am under 16 or over 75?
Young volunteers under 16 can volunteer as long as they are a member of a Swim England affiliated club. Members over 70 can volunteer up to the age of 85 but have a reduced level of personal accident cover through Swim England club membership insurance. This does not affect the public liability of the club or event.
