ABOUT US
United in the Pool, Driven by Legacy
For over a century, Derwentside ASC and Gateshead & Whickham ASC have stood as pillars of swimming excellence and community spirit in the North East. In 2024, these two powerhouse clubs joined forces, diving into a bold new chapter as Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team—a unified force with one mission: to inspire, elevate, and empower every swimmer.
From fledgling paddlers to seasoned competitors, we offer expertly coached training across thirteen dynamic swimming groups, including Learn-to-Swim, Competitive Squads, Masters, and our spirited SwimFit programme. Our athletes don’t just train—they thrive, regularly competing at local, regional, national, and international levels.
We remain deeply rooted in the Tyne and Wear region, continuing the proud legacy of both clubs. Derwentside’s journey began in 1987, evolving from Stanley Swimming Club with a strong developmental ethos. Gateshead & Whickham, established in the 1970s, has long been a heartbeat of the Gateshead community, with an impressive competitive track record.
Together, aligned and empowered as one, Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team operates on a not-for-profit basis. We’re powered by passion and most importantly, the people behind the scenes—from our dedicated committee to our fundraising heroes.
Our Purpose
At Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team, we’re not just shaping swimmers—we’re building champions in every sense of the word. Through elite training, unwavering support, and a culture rooted in discipline and respect, we help athletes unlock their potential both in the pool and beyond.
Whether it's chasing personal bests, standing tall on the podium, or showing resilience in everyday life, we believe greatness is built—not born. Our coaches, committee, and club community are devoted to providing the tools, mindset, and opportunities to help each swimmer rise, thrive, and lead.
Because, being a champion isn’t only about medals—it’s about attitude, effort, and heart.
Welcome to Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team. This is more than swimming—this is legacy in motion.
