Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team

About us

Derwentside ASC and Gateshead & Whickham ASC have previously been two separate swimming clubs that have been enjoyed in the region for around one hundred years. Over time, both clubs have added value, determination, and a sense of community to their swimmers in every aspect of life. In 2024, both swimming clubs merged as one, becoming Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team.   

Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team provide structured coached training sessions across a broad age range with thirteen swimming groups. These swimming groups include our learn-to-swim programme, competitive swimming groups, masters swimming and our own swim fit squad. The vast majority of our swimmers and master swimmers compete in local, regional, national and international level competitions and championships.  

Before 2024, both swimming clubs resided and covered the Tyne and Wear Region; this region is still covered by Derwentside and Gateshead Swim Team. In 1987, Derwentside was formed as a swimming club as it was formerly Stanley Swimming Club. From the introduction of a newly created Derwentside Swimming Development Scheme, Derwentside Swimming Club was an extension of the learn-to-swim programme.

Gateshead & Whickham was formed as a swimming club in the 1970's when Gateshead swimming club aligned with Whickham Swimming Club and has been at the heart of the community of Gateshead since and has thrived as a competitive club. Both clubs have competed at international and regional levels throughout their lengthy history.

 

As a Swimming Club, we aim to give you and your child/children the best experience that we can give. Giving your child opportunities to emotionally and physically develop through training and competition which ultimately creates amazing memories and great friendships that will last a lifetime. We operate as a charity and are supported through fundraising through our galas and incredible members and committee.
